On the map you looked at today, Greenland is about the size of Africa. Africa is fourteen times bigger. That is not a mistake — the map is doing exactly what it was built to do, and it was not built to show you how big things are.
In 1827 Carl Friedrich Gauss proved that a sphere cannot be flattened onto a plane without stretching it somewhere. Wrap paper around a ball and it creases; wrap it around a tube and it lies flat, because a tube is a bent sheet and a ball is not.
So every flat map of the Earth is wrong — not badly made, but wrong by mathematics, permanently. The only real question a map answers is which kind of wrong you would like. Which makes it a choice somebody made.
At sea you steer by holding a constant compass bearing. On a globe that path curves into a slow spiral. Gerardus Mercator published the arrangement in 1569 where holding one bearing becomes a straight line you can draw with a ruler.
To keep every bearing true, scale has to grow away from the equator, and area grows with it — about twofold near the latitude of Paris, more than eightfold in northern Greenland. The swollen Arctic is not a flaw. It is the receipt.
In 1973 Arno Peters put forward a map that keeps areas true and accused cartographers of drawing the world to flatter empires. The construction was not new: James Gall had published it in 1855 and nobody cared. The profession answered that area-true costs shape — the tropics stretch tall and thin.
Boston put the area-true map into its classrooms in 2017; cartographers drew a better one, Equal Earth, in 2018 to end the quarrel. Fifty years of argument, a genuinely better answer, and the map on your phone did not move a pixel.
In 2005 a team at Google had to cut the world into pieces small enough to send over a slow connection. The answer is a pyramid of squares: the whole world is one square, then four, then sixteen, each level the one above cut into quarters.
A tile is a square picture of a square patch of world. If the map squeezes one direction harder than the other, that patch arrives as a rectangle and the picture shears. So the map must stretch both directions equally at every point — and of the maps that do, one lays the world out as a plain rectangle, north always up, with meridians evenly spaced. Mercator. It fits inside a square only because the web version cuts the top and bottom off near 85°; Mercator's own Arctic runs upward forever.
Bing, Apple and OpenStreetMap followed, because tiles from different providers must line up on one grid. The industry registered a number for it: 900913, which on a screen reads as the word google. The picture was not chosen by cartographers or governments. It was chosen by whoever needed the tiles to be square.
164 countries asked. The United States voted against, calling it ideological. Six abstained. Then nothing was obliged to happen, because there is nobody to oblige: no international regulator of maps, no treaty assigning the picture to anyone. The tile grid belongs to an industry, the schoolbooks to ministries, the map in your pocket to a company.
A rule has an author you can go to. A default has only the reason it was convenient — and that reason may have expired decades ago without anyone noticing.
Stop having one map, stop flattening it, change the tiles, or legislate the classroom. Each is real, and each is priced. And there is a fifth option, the one currently running: keep it — whose price is a fourteenfold error on the one comparison people make most, which is how big my part of the world is.
Nobody crosses an ocean on a constant compass bearing any more. The navigator's reason expired — and nothing had to replace it, because by then something else was holding the same shape in place. Not a cartographer, not a ministry: an engineer with a deadline, cutting the world into squares small enough to travel down a slow wire.
A rule gets made by someone who knows they are deciding. A default gets set by someone solving a smaller problem, who would be astonished to learn what they settled. So it never gets a vote, or an author, or a date when someone checks whether it still makes sense.
